Unique walnut chair.

An extraordinary and likely unique arm chair in walnut. Barley twist turnings and sumptuously carved top rail, bottom and intermediate rails, the carving is in high relief and is repeated on the arms., the original finials survive and are well turned. This model of chair which became fashionable in England from about 1660 was almost always caned to the back and seat. This chair has a timber latticework in place of cane, giving a portcullis effect. The back has the addition of scratch carved motifs. The likelihood is that the chair was used with a cushion to the seat.

The seat has had two pieces of timber nailed into the bottom of the chair to strengthen it, this is very historic work, it is likely that the seat failed early in its life, there have been additional strengthening block restorations and the seat is now sound. There is some old worm damage as is expected with walnut from this early period. There is some loss to the toes.
